Shepherd Construction Hands over New Munitions Factory To BAE Systems

Shepherd ConstructionMain contractor Shepherd Construction has completed a new munitions factory at Radway Green in Crewe, on behalf of defence, security and aerospace company BAE Systems.

The £20 million design and build project is the first new-build factory for military small arms production in the UK since the Second World War and the modern 23,000 sq metre facility will enable BAE Systems to provide increased product quality and reliability with newly automated and energy efficient systems.

The construction project required careful consideration being given to the design of the frame and walls of the propellant silos and loading area. In addition extremely stringent ATEX ratings have been adhered to and a `˜total loss' ventilation system is in operation in the propellant loading area to ensure none of the air is re-circulated.

The project has also included the provision of an indoor firing range to batch test the ammunition which includes a floating floor to isolate the noise and vibration; and welfare and administration facilities such as a staff restaurant and car park.

Peter Millett, managing director for Shepherd Construction's West Division commented: "We're delighted to have completed such a prestigious project which has required specialist design and construction. We now look forward to Radway Green becoming a centre of excellence for small arms ammunition in the UK."
